Fundamentals of Building Trades - Fireproofing, Firestopping and Building Thermal Insulation

Wednesday, February 22, 2023 (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (CST)

Description

The Fundamentals of Building Trades – Fireproofing, Firestopping and Building Thermal course is a one-session, in person program designed to provide a general overview of fire safety and building code requirements in commercial buildings.

Course Objectives:

One of the more difficult scopes to interpret from plans and specifications is the fireproofing.  An even more difficult task is to ensure that the proper scope is bought out so that changes with cost impact are minimized, allowing for the work to proceed in accordance with the project schedule.  The intent of this course is to assist the attendees in gaining a better understanding of the current building code requirements and present practical knowledge that will help get this scope of work done properly on time and in budget.

Fireproofing

  • How to correctly interpret the project requirements given on the project or code information sheets.
  • How to take advantage of code approved allowable hourly rating reductions that will reduce the value of the work.
  • How to ensure during buy-out the correct scope of work is included.
  • Priming requirements of steel in relation to the types of fireproofing to be applied.  How to best ensure that the steel fabricator knows what should be primed and not primed so that this can be done accurately in the fabrication shop.
  • Importance of ensuring the correct primers and topcoats are used on intumescent members.
  • How and when to schedule and coordinate this work with respect to the work of other trades to ensure the most economical and efficient installation duration.
  • Budget patching needs and how to minimize it.
  • Inspection requirements.

The course also overs the following scopes of work and will assist the attendees in gaining a better understanding so that they can be bought out and scheduled accurately.

Firestopping

  • Code requirements and when tested and listed systems/Engineering Judgments are required.
  • How to ensure during buy-out the correct scope of work is included.
  • Coordination and sequencing with other trades.
  • Inspection requirements.

Building Thermal Insulation

  • Energy code requirements.
  • Code requirements in relation to combustibility, surface burning characteristics and NFPA 285 requirements.
  • Vapor retarders – when to use and the correct orientation of the vapor retarder should it be required.
  • Types of materials and proper use.
  • Spray foam and when thermal barrier coatings are required.

Target Audience:

Ideal candidates for this course include staff new to the construction industry; or management, supervisory, or estimating staff seeking additional knowledge of life and building safety in the commercial construction building sector.
