Safety Excellence Awards

The AGC Houston Safety Excellence Awards recognize construction companies demonstrating leadership in safety management. Nominated by industry peers, the award recipients are recognized for promoting safety excellence.

Who Can Be Nominated?

Any AGC Houston Specialty Contractor (Subcontractor) member may apply or be nominated by a General Contractor.

Ray Lambright Excellence In Safety Award

(Safety Professional/Director of the Year)

This award recognizes safety directors or construction professionals who have provided significant leadership to improve their company's safety and health program to advance the safety of all construction workers.

Who Can Be Nominated?

AGC Houston Members may nominate an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and a personal commitment in directing their company’s safety and health program in advancing the safety of all construction workers. Nominations may be submitted by the individuals’ companies, their peers or associates. This award is intended to recognize company safety directors, however, other individuals who have provided significant leadership in improving construction safety can be considered by the awards committee.

Time is running out to register for AGC Houston’s OSHA 10-Hour in Construction Training Back to School Flash Sale on August 11-12, 2026. For a limited time, this course is only $75. Presented by AGC Houston’s authorized instructors, this training is designed to teach employees the basic essentials of occupational safety and health in the construction industry.

The curriculum covers an introduction to workplace safety topics for field workers including workplace risks, employee rights, and employer obligations.

Upon completion of this course, students will receive a wallet card, certificate of completion, and course materials. Plus, breakfast is included both days!

JMI Contractors v. Medellin: How the Texas Supreme Court’s Ruling
on Two Issues Clarifies Future Liability for Jobsite Injuries

Last month, in JMI Contractors, LLC v. Medellin, the Texas Supreme Court erased a $4.3 million judgment by addressing two issues that can completely change the outcome of a jobsite injury lawsuit:

(1) whether the injured worker’s claim should be tried as a general negligence claim or a premises liability claim; and

(2) whether the injured worker, who was an independent contractor, could hold the general contractor and/or owner liable for open and obvious dangerous site conditions.

The JMI Contractors Court answered that the injured worker’s claims fell under the harsher scrutiny of premises liability and that he could not hold the owner or general contractor liable for the open and obvious risk of falling off a roof’s edge.

For owners and general contractors this ruling means reduced liability exposure when an independent contractor is injured on a job site because of an open and obvious dangerous site condition. For subcontractors, who are commonly (but not always) independent contractors, this ruling serves as a reminder that they need to manage, price, and insure themselves for these types of accidents.

This article explores the JMI Contractors case on a high-level by analyzing the accident, the Court’s reasoning on its decision, and general practical takeaways for construction companies going forward.
