Description





A long-standing part of AGC Houston’s educational curriculum, this course provides a practical overview of the requirements for properly preserving and pursuing lien and bond claims on private and public construction projects in Texas.

Participants will learn the critical notice requirements, filing deadlines, and documentation needed to protect payment rights. In addition to covering the technical requirements of Texas lien and bond law, the course addresses the real-world challenges contractors and subcontractors face—including when to send notices, how to avoid missing important deadlines, and how to properly document and support the amount of a claim if it is challenged.

Attendee questions and discussion are encouraged throughout the program, allowing participants to work through common scenarios and better understand how Texas lien and bond requirements apply to actual construction projects.

The course is taught by a Texas Board Certified Construction Lawyer with extensive experience handling lien and bond claims and representing parties both for and against surety companies.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will have a better understanding of:

  • Notice requirements for second-tier subcontractors
  • Pre-lien notice deadlines, including how deadlines are calculated when the 15th falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday
  • Deadlines for filing liens involving contractual retainage
  • Deadlines for filing suit to foreclose on a lien
  • Practical considerations for documenting and supporting lien and bond claims

This course is designed for construction professionals involved in managing contracts, receivables, and payment on construction projects, including:

  • Credit managers and accounts receivable professionals
  • CFOs, controllers, and other financial professionals

  • Other project team members responsible for protecting and securing payment
