Description

Construction contracts define responsibilities, allocate risk, and establish the rules that govern a project—but understanding what those provisions mean in practice can be challenging.

This two-hour seminar provides construction professionals with a practical refresher on construction contract law and risk management. Participants will learn how to read contracts more effectively, recognize provisions that may create unnecessary exposure, and better understand how contractual language shifts risk among owners, contractors, subcontractors, and other project participants.

The course focuses on identifying potentially problematic provisions, understanding which clauses may be unenforceable, and evaluating contract language before it becomes a project issue. Participants will also explore strategies for negotiating and modifying contract terms, developing appropriate standard provisions, and recognizing when legal counsel should be involved.

The goal is not to turn construction professionals into lawyers, but to help them become more informed contract reviewers and better equipped to recognize, communicate, and manage contractual risk.

Read and interpret construction contracts and identify potential risks
Recognize how contract provisions allocate and shift risk
Identify provisions that may be unenforceable and understand why
Spot contract clauses that could negatively affect their company or project

Identify standard contract provisions that can help protect their organization
Recognize when an issue requires legal guidance and work more efficiently with legal counsel
